Narrative Touch Therapy is a term I coined to describe a type of therapy I found to be very effective for my Clients. It is a form of Somatic Therapy which works to connect the mind with the body. Somatic is a Greek word for relating to the body.
Somatic therapy is a form of therapy that focuses on the connection between the mind and body to promote healing and well-being. It recognizes that our physical experiences and sensations can impact our mental and emotional states and visa versa. Somatic therapists work with clients to explore and address physical sensations, movements, and patterns as a way to access and process emotions, trauma, and other psychological issues. Through techniques such as body awareness, breathwork, movement, and touch, somatic therapy aims to release tension, promote self-awareness, and support overall emotional and psychological healing.
Early on in my Energy Therapy practice, I noticed that when my clients talked about their troubles while I performed touch therapy such as Reiki, Eden Energy Medicine or various forms of accupressure, certain areas of their bodies would respond energetically.
For example, one client was talking about a stressful dinner he had had with his colleagues where he felt singled out and embarrassed. As my hands were on his back, I noticed his left kidney area started tingling. When I noticed this sensation, I shared it with him and encouraged him to keep recalling this experience, like the sounds in the room, the meal he was eating, but mostly how it made him feel emotionally. I then asked him to notice anywhere else in his body he felt a sensation as he shared his experience. He noticed his chest felt tight and his mind started to race. With my hands gently placed on his chest and his neck, we continued working together to clear the negative energy that was stored in his body from this memory.
Eventually, he could recall the memory without the tension and stress in his body and this memory no longer had a detrimental effect on his body or his mind.
Narrative Touch Therapy works for a variety of reasons.
- First of all, when clients realize their body is a recipient of healing, safe touch, their bodies feel safe enough to release the stored memory.
- They also know first hand that their bodies have an energetic component, and aren’t just a mass of flesh and bone, driven by chemicals. This type of knowing is called gnosis. It’s not just a belief, you know it in your being.
- It helps clients have a deep awareness of how they can release the negative emotions stored in their bodies with just their minds. They realize how powerful thought is.
- This awareness of how powerful their minds are makes them realize how damaging negative self talk is. They often have a renewed vow to speak to themselves with loving compassion.
- Narrative Touch Therapy thus develops an awareness within, that if negative thoughts and memories aren’t cleared out regularly, they can build up in our bodies, like plaque on our teeth, until you need professional help to clear it. This is why chronic stress wreaks havoc on our bodies.
